10 Delicious Ways to Elevate Your Hot Chocolate

10 Delicious Ways to Elevate Your Hot Chocolate

Enjoying a cup of hot chocolate is a wonderful way to celebrate colder temperatures. Hot chocolate with an unexpected twist is even better. Whether you use a powdered instant mix or make your hot chocolate on the stove, you’ll love these ten ways of getting creative with this wintertime drink.

Peanut Butter

Peanut butter and chocolate is a winning combination. To create this tempting treat, just add a spoonful of peanut butter and stir. You might also drop in some peanut butter candies.

Peppermint

Peppermint is a classic cold-weather spice that goes beautifully with chocolate. Add some peppermint extract to your drink and serve it with a candy cane for stirring. You could also crush some peppermint candy to sprinkle on top, which is especially good with whipped cream.

Matcha Tea

Matcha tea is a popular health food bursting with antibiotics. It also happens to be an excellent flavor in dessert. Add a little bit of matcha tea powder to your hot chocolate. You’ll be pleasing your taste buds and your body.

Orange

Chocolate covered oranges are a decadent dessert, and you can recreate this flavor in your hot chocolate. Use a tiny bit of orange extract for flavor and mix in some grated orange zest for an unexpected taste. Garnish with a candied orange slice.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon smells like the holidays. It brings visions of baked goods and hot cider. All some cinnamon to your hot chocolate for a comfortable, cozy feeling. Use a cinnamon stick for stirring.

Ginger

Ginger is a warm and inviting spice perfect for cold weather. Get inspired by cookies like gingersnaps when you add a pinch of ginger to your hot chocolate.  In fact, this drink would be best enjoyed with gingerbread cookies on the side.

Cayenne Pepper

It might seem unusual to add pepper to hot chocolate, but this has been a tradition in Mexico for years. A dash of cayenne brings just a little kick and balances the sweet chocolate.

Pumpkin Spice

If you can’t get enough pumpkin spice, this is the hot chocolate add-on for you. Create your own pumpkin spice chocolate drink by adding a few dashes of pumpkin pie spice. You could also use pumpkin butter for a richer texture and flavor. This hot chocolate definitely calls for whipped cream as well.

Chai Latte

Combine two of your favorite winter drinks when you add a chai latte tea to regular hot chocolate. Half tea and half hot chocolate will do the drink, but you can adjust the amount any way you like.

Eggnog

This final flavor to try in hot chocolate will result in a creamy masterpiece of a winter beverage. Using milk instead of water for the base of your hot chocolate, substitute some of the milk with eggnog according to taste. Sprinkle with a little bit of nutmeg to finish it off.

Hot chocolate is a favorite of many in cold weather. You can bring a little extra to your hot chocolate with one of these ten elevating additions.

The Myth of Gluten Free

The Myth of Gluten Free

By Laurie Richardone

It’s easy for us to make a decision about something, before we’ve had an opportunity to experience it. Gluten Free cooking is a case in point. Many restaurants offer gluten free alternatives that are not prepared with the same love or attention as their other dishes. This only supports the myth that gluten free food is a lesser cuisine.

Gluten free is as ancient as the hills, a way of eating that is natural to the majority of world people. It’s not about taking something out, It’s about using different beneficial ingredients to create delicious food. There are so many flours utilized by experienced gluten free chefs to create flavors and textures that are scrumptious. I myself have experimented on countless recipes to transform many traditional gluten filled foods into dishes that are lower in carbs, easier to digest, and exquisitely flavorful. Whether gluten sensitive or not, eating a wheat free diet is beneficial. Be thankful to be forced into this gluten free world, your palate will be forever grateful.

Let me share my personal journey. Several years ago, I was experiencing chronic stomach pain and headaches. It was suggested  that I eliminate wheat from my diet. Having  grown up in a large Italian family enjoying wonderful traditional foods, like pasta, pastries, and of course great bread from Brooklyn bakeries, the thought of a gluten free existence was depressing. Fortunately my travels to Italy have taken me to many wonderful local markets, and as such I began to realize that flours like chestnut, garbanzo and almond have always been staples of Italian cooking: wheat is only one possibility. My newfound discoveries have led to my chronic stomach aches fading away. With this, my purpose became clear: I now happily teach seasonal, gluten, and grain-free cooking classes in an intimate setting at my home in Asheville. Someone once asked me what I do, I simply said “I help people feel their personal best through food, joy, and mindfulness.”

More people today are eager to live a healthy lifestyle. A big part of that is an awareness of the food we eat, where it comes from, and how it is grown. To have an understanding of the ingredients we consume is vitally important, as our health is directly related to the food we eat. Large conglomerates like Monsanto are no longer the only choice. I feel lucky to have found beautiful Asheville with its abundance of organic growers and ingredients. This bounty is my foundation to create delicious, gourmet, healthy food. The reward is sitting down with friends and family sharing a good meal.

Let’s raise our glasses to all the farmers, their labors of love, and the integrity to keep our land healthy.

To that end . . . prepare with pure fresh
ingredients, and let food be thy medicine.

Beginning a Healthy Weight Loss Journey

Beginning a Healthy Weight Loss Journey

By Julie Werner

When we have a question, we can all appreciate how easy it is to access information on any subject just by typing or saying the magic words into our phone. Sometimes however, it’s simply a frustrating, information overload. What are the facts? What are just gimmicks? Who even wrote that online article? What we really want is to simply make healthy changes. You’re saved. In a nutshell, here’s the practical “How To,” and what I tell my clients when they want me to simplify weight loss for them in a practical way.

Step 1 – Tracking

Use a tracker for logging in what you are eating. I like the myfitnesspal app. It will calculate the daily calories needed to lose an average of one to two pounds per week. It is not healthy to lose much more than this. Myfitnesspal will also track your intake of macronutrients. Macros are the three categories of food: protein, carbohydrates, and fat. After you’ve entered your data on age, height, weight, and activity levels, the app will provide your daily limit. Stay within this range. “Calories in/calories out” is still, and always will be, the science behind losing weight. Calories aren’t equally healthful, so fill up on veggies and lean protein choices. Also be sure to choose healthy carbs such as whole, unrefined varieties packed with nutrients, not empty unwholesome calories that spike your blood sugar and leave you craving for more soon after.

Maybe you know tracking alone isn’t going to hold you accountable, and you desire additional support in your weight loss endeavor. Both the American Dietetics Association and the American Council on Exercise recommend Weight Watchers as a healthy and scientifically sound program. If you need additional support or something more personal, I recommend finding an experienced trainer who holds specialty certifications in weight management and fitness nutrition, or finding a licensed dietician or nutritionist. As always, please follow the recommendations of your physician.

Step 2 – Macronutrients and Your Body Type

Macronutrients are protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Each gram of protein has four calories, each gram of carbohydrate has four calories, and each gram of fat has nine calories. These three categories are represented in percentage of total daily calories consumed. What should your personal macro balance look like? This varies in each person due to many complex factors involving your body type. The tracker will make the basic macro percentage suggestions, you can increase your protein, and decrease your carbs and fat if you see you’re not losing as much as you want. The suggested percentage of calories consumed as protein, carbs, and fat per day are just the starting points. The best way to know the right percentage range for you, is to simply monitor your progress. If you lose more than two pounds per week, you’re losing lean muscle, not fat. Drastic measures damage the metabolism, causes energy loss, stress, and won’t last. Remember this is a healthy, day by day journey, not a race of starvation and deprivation. Almost every single Biggest Loser contestant has gained all the weight back and more.

Step 3 – Get Moving

If you have an activity plan in place, keep up the good work. If you aren’t getting at least 30 minutes of exercise four or five times each week, please begin to add this to your day. The calorie deficit is just the tip of the iceberg of the rewards you’ll reap from moving more. Exercise reduces stress, strengthens your body, and literally distributes fresh new cells to the bones. The mental health rewards are unreal as well because they can reduce anxiety and depression, improve general mood and hormonal balance, and aid in sleep. If you need one more reason, I’ll give you three; YOU being at a healthy weight will cut your risk of heart disease, diabetes, and stroke in HALF!

Capture the Season in a Cup– Happy Fall

Capture the Season in a Cup– Happy Fall

The leaves are beginning to change color and the smell of fall is in the air. The days are getting chilly, so now is the time to dig those cozy sweaters out of the back of your closet. There’s no doubt that fall is one of the best seasons not just because of the weather, but also because of the fall-themed drinks. Pumpkin spice lattes have become a traditional, and delicious seasonal beverage. However, don’t limit yourself to one brew when there are so many other amazing mixtures. Here are three fall-themed drinks that are the perfect beverage for the season and that you can make at home!

Hot Chocolate—With a Twist

Hot chocolate is a standard cold weather staple. It’s pretty easy: cocoa powder, hot milk, and a dash of whipped cream if you’re feeling fancy. But this hot chocolate is different. To upgrade your typical hot chocolate, add a dash of pumpkin puree to the milk as you are heating it. Let those two flavors meld together, then stir in the cocoa powder. You’ll be left with a pumpkin-y hot chocolate that tastes delicious. It might sound strange, but the flavor is mind-blowing. If you really want to spice it up, sprinkle the top with pumpkin spice or cinnamon.

Homemade Apple Cider

Are you trying to figure out what to do with all of those apples you got while you were apple picking this season? Instead of apple pie, grab eight to ten apples and make your own apple cider! First, core your apples and cut into quarters, then add them to a large pot. Add just enough water to cover the apples, then add a half cup of sugar (or a full cup if you like your cider sweeter). Add a cinnamon stick or two, and three or four tablespoons of allspice, then simmer on low for an hour. The result is a delicious, homemade apple cider that makes your kitchen smell exactly like fall.

Spiked Spanish Coffee

As the days are getting shorter and the weather is getting cooler, it becomes harder to stay awake in the evening. But this Spiked Spanish Coffee will keep you alert as it soothes your nerves from the day. Brew any kind of coffee then add a shot of brandy, and a shot of Kahlua. No need for extra creamer here—the Kahlua adds a boozy shot of cream. Mix together and serve hot. It’s the perfect drink to sip after dinner.

These three delicious drinks are sure to keep you feeling cozy this fall. While you’re in between pumpkin spice lattes, try making one of these drinks at home. You could cozy up with a good book and the hot chocolate, or sit by the fireplace sipping on a spiked coffee. You may even try making homemade apple cider at your next gathering!
