The Fascinating Story of Henna Tattoos

The Fascinating Story of Henna Tattoos

Henna tattoos are all the rage these days, but many people do not realize that Indian Henna has a long and storied history – tracing back many centuries. The Henna plant itself dates all the way back to ancient Egypt, when it was presented as a gift to Queen Mumtaz of India.

The ruling Mughals soon became familiar with Indian Henna, noting its use as both a beauty product and a decorative product for the skin. Henna was especially prized for wedding ceremonies, where it was used to decorate the bride and make her even more beautiful for her new husband.

In fact, the use of Indian Henna for tattoos dates back at least 5,000 years, when it was used by the ancient Egyptians to decorate their hands and nails, and even their fingers and toes. The Pharaohs were said to be especially fond of Henna, even having their bodies stained with the product before they were mummified and entombed for the trip to the next world.

Henna has long been revered as a symbol of good luck, and it is often applied to the skin right before important events. Perhaps that is why Indian Henna was so popular for wedding ceremonies. The tradition of applying Henna to the skin for good luck has been documented in many parts of the world, including not only India and Egypt but Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Turkey as well.

The World of Henna Tattoos

Tattoos have played a major role in cultures around the world, from the Middle East and Africa to Asia and the Americas. For many thousands of years men and women have used tattoos not only as decoration but as an integral part of tribal rites and rituals. Tattoos were used to distinguish individuals, show rank and welcome young people into adulthood. While modern tattoo art is mostly about good looks and individual expression, ancient Indian Henna tattoo art was mainly about culture and tradition.

Indian Henna was often used along with other popular dyes like indigo to create a temporary decoration for the skin. The result was body art that was both great looking and long-lasting. Indian Henna in particular was revered for its ability to give the skin a deep and lustrous hue that was highly prized in cultures around the world.

Tattoo artists use the leaves of the Henna plant, which grows throughout India and much of South Asia, to create their masterpieces. The leaves of the plant are dried and used to create colorfast dyes in a range of shades. These dyes range in hue from the palest brown to the darkest russet reds – and everything in between. The leaves of the Indian Henna plant can be used to dye not only skin but hair and fingernails as well. Henna dye is also commonly used on clothing to create distinctive patterns and shades. In the world of traditional and alternative medicine, Indian Henna has often been used as a treatment for sunburn as well.

The art of Henna dying and Henna tattoo has been practiced for literally thousands of years, primarily in India and Egypt, but also in other parts of the world. As people traveled from India and the Middle East, the art of Henna tattooing began to spread. People from other parts of the world were immediately taken with the beautiful designs tattooed on the skin and the clothing of those travelers, and they looked for a way to recreate that look for themselves.

The interest in Indian Henna continues to this day, and there has been quite an increase in the number of Henna tattoo providers over the past couple of years. In fact, many people prefer the look of a quality Indian Henna tattoo to the traditional version. Henna tattoos have been around for at least the last 5,000 years, and chances are they will remain popular well into the future.

Summer Beauty Checklist

Summer Beauty Checklist

If you feel like you could use a bit of a glow up, this beauty checklist is for you. It’s time to get ready for summer, show some skin, and jump back into your social circle.

From head to toe, we’ll get you back into prime condition.

Hair  It’s time to freshen your locks with a maintenance trim and color. Don’t be afraid to DIY if your favorite salon is booked for the next few months. It’s especially important to trim if you have bangs, which can look unloved without frequent shortenings.

Add a weekly hair mask or hot oil treatment to boost the health and shine of your mane. Many kitchen ingredients, such as egg whites or olive oil, will get the job done.

Face  How old is your makeup? It’s likely time to purchase a new stock, and maybe experiment with different brands while you’re at it.

Washing your makeup brushes with soap and water is another important step to avoiding exposure to bacteria, which can cause skin breakouts. Replace any broken or missing beauty tools as well.

It’s also time for a facial. If your budget can handle a professional facial, try to book one that offers exfoliation, extractions, and a gentle peel. However, you can certainly freshen your skin at home with a DIY facial. The internet is full of facial recipes from common ingredients. Just focus on cleansing thoroughly and moisturizing deeply.

Skin  For the rest of your body, exfoliate from the neck down. Gritty scrubs, such as coffee grounds, will sluff off all your
dead skin to give you a new glow. Follow up with moisturizer and sunscreen, as this fresh layer will be more susceptible to damage from the elements.

Clothes  Peruse your favorite stores in person or online to refresh your closet. You need a couple of cute outfits that fit well and make you feel excited to get dressed.

Try a curated subscription box if you’d rather a professional weigh in on what would look best on your body type.

Nails  It’s a good idea to file or clip your nails, both on fingers and toes, and get a good polish. Don’t forget to trim the cuticles and scrub away the calluses. Summer is all about barefoot beaches and walks in sandals.

Body  It’s also time to hit the gym. Set a workout time daily and commit to at least 20 minutes. Your body will be stronger and leaner by the end of the summer.

Supplements  Ask your doctor what supplements you might need based on your diet. Most people lack omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin D. However, your doctor can tell you if you are low in any particular area.

Building up your body’s supply of vitamins and minerals, as well as good fats, will help your skin, hair, nails, and much more look beautiful.

Although this checklist is for summer, it’s actually great to run through at the beginning of each new season. It keeps you fresh and glowing all year long.

“Walk with me while I tell you a story”

“Walk with me while I tell you a story”

When he first came to the barn he had survived years of abuse. He had been kicked, hit, bruised, branded, and scarred. And after years the feelings of shame, fear, pain, and loneliness turned to anger, and eventually he grew tired of being hurt, so He pushed back. Then he was labeled. Aggressive. Violent. Unmanageable. And those who were supposed to have nurtured him finally abandoned him. But his story didn’t end there…

Today he is safe. Happy. He has found compassion, acceptance, and purpose.

And now that you have heard a small piece of his story, can you tell me…is he a horse, or human?

Walk With Me is a non-profit organization in Conover, NC. Our Mission is to create a program that focuses on the healing steps for the ones that have been mistreated, abused, and forgotten. Our vision is to provide hope and healing for all those who need it and can not afford it.

At Walk With Me we provide our community the opportunity to heal with Equine Assisted Psychotherapy/Learning/Life Coach. While at the barn, our clients will work in a variety of outdoor settings through their journey. Equine Assisted Psychotherapy is an experiential (hands-on) form of therapy which teams with the therapist, equine specialist, client, and the horse to strive for happiness in life. During sessions, our clients build a relationship with one of the many therapy horses at the barn. While building the relationship with the horse, the client is able to process the present emotions and obstacles in their lives. As the obstacles occur in sessions our Equine Specialist assists the client in understanding the communication between them and the horse. Horses are prey animals that react in the present moment. They communicate with body language. These interactions are beneficial for clients who have difficulty in communication, depression, anxiety, self esteem, healthy relationships, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Walk With Me offers our community, families, and individuals a few different programs to include individual sessions and/or ten week group sessions. Operation Battle Horse is a program geared for Veterans who feel like they have lost their identity and purpose after active duty. We understand how difficult the transition from military life to civilian life can be. By providing support and guidance we can help in that transition to make it as smooth as possible. Our Youth Program works with your youth and family to help improve communication within the family, build confidence, increase self-esteem, and find happiness in their lives. The Women’s Trauma Program guides women to find the strength that may have been lost. The goal is to support women in a safe place, with the focus on allowing the
safety for positive steps forward.

“I lost who I was, I was only the victim of a traumatic experience; the hardest part of the journey was to discover that it was safe to find me.”–Signed Unknown

How To Avoid Common Interior Design Mistakes In Your Home

How To Avoid Common Interior Design Mistakes In Your Home

By Julie Rorie

Between selecting furniture, experimenting with paint samples or hanging art, there are hundreds of small decisions that go into styling the perfect space.  Even the slightest error in judgement can have a detrimental effect on a room. Use these insider tips to prevent a design faux pas in your home.

Buy Furniture that Varies in Height

Scale and proportion are the holy grail of design. If all of your furniture is the same size, your  room will feel uninviting, and uninteresting.

Think of your room as a cityscape and fill it with a combination of heights, widths, and depths. Rooms need a stimulating mix of scale and shapes to make them feel right.

Choose the Right Rug

Rugs can completely transform a room and create a focal point of interest, but it can be hard to judge the correct size for your home. A rug should ground the space and encompass all seating around it. An appropriately sized rug tells everyone “this is the conversation area”.

Living rooms almost always need a rug that’s at least 8×10 ft. to 9×12 ft.

A 4×6 ft. rug is fine next to a bed, or in a kitchen/foyer, but will most likely not work in a living room.  Area rugs should ideally be big enough to fit at least the front legs
of all chairs/sofas on them.

Be Careful Not to Hang Art Too High

Finding the perfect piece of art for your home is only half the challenge. The mistake happens when art is hung too high or in an inappropriate spot.

Hang art so that the center is at eye-level. If the art is to hang above a piece of furniture, hang it so that the bottom of the frame hits 3-4 inches above it.

Layer your Lighting

Lighting decisions might seem like a practical part of the design process, but it’s an aspect people
often misjudge. Lighting is incredibly important to any space. When lighting is washed over you from above, it can be unflattering and harsh. The best spaces have a plethora of light sources to create various ambiances.

Have lights on dimmers and from multiple sources at different heights, such as floor lamps and table lamps.  Always choose soft white bulbs as harsh fluorescent or white lights make a space feel stark and uninviting. Warm lighting not only sets the mood, but also makes a room feel intimate and inviting.

Try Placing Furniture Off the Wall

People often fall into the simple styling trap of this linear arrangement which is not cozy or inviting and can discourage conversation. In the end, it doesn’t save or create more space.

Try conversational furniture placement, which focuses on grouping accents. Pull pieces toward one another and off the walls to create more intimate, useful seating. If you’re unsure, play with different groupings. The most common layout is facing a sofa opposite two arm chairs with  a coffee table in the middle.

TIPS to Spring Clean your body

TIPS to Spring Clean your body

By Veena Somani, MD

We as a family are embarking on a big adventure (an international move) this summer and have been in the midst of some major spring cleaning. Everything from selling the “can’t live without” Honda Odyssey to pulling weeds in the backyard to make room from fresh growth.

As a Lifestyle Medicine physician and holistic nutrition coach, I find myself having the conversation of “spring cleaning” often. In light of an ongoing Coronavirus pandemic, and the ramifications of it that we have seen particularly in the US, I know we have some work to do to improve the wellness of our overall population. According to the CDC, almost half of our population is obese, and as we well know, obesity alone increases the risk of the top causes of preventable death – heart disease, cancer, diabetes and stroke. Those with obesity have also been the hardest hit with the virus, whether in post-COVID syndrome or increased hospitalizations and death.

But why aren’t we talking more about rehauling our food and healthcare system and not just about the short term importance of mask wearing and handwashing? Why are physicians still reimbursed on the number of patient visits and medications prescribed? Why are public schools still serving antiquated GMO-laden lunches where high fructose syrup ketchup is counted as a vegetable? That is likely worth another article altogether, but of course it comes down to politics and money.

My passion in medicine has been to help transition people to become more empowered with their own health, to peel off prescription medications and to mostly avoid needing conventional “sick care” clinics altogether. Now as we start to open back up to get back to “normal” post-pandemic, I urge you to step back and take a birds eye view of your overall health.

Here are 4 nutrition tips you can institute today to start to spring clean your body:

Hydrate Aim for 0.5-1 ounce of water per your weight in pounds. Ideally on first awakening, drink 1-2 glasses of room temperature water with lemon for an alkaline detox.

Eat slowly This is a lost art but so important for proper digestion, better nutrient absorption and less overeating. Take a 5-10 minute pause in between servings to allow yourself time to feel satiated.

Remove processed foods If it has more than 5 ingredients in it, or ingredients that you can’t pronounce, don’t eat it. Eat as much as you can from food without labels or packaging at all.

Eat more plants Every “diet” in the world agrees that eating more plants will improve brain, bone and overall health. Make it pretty and eat the rainbow!

Remember, small steps lead to big steps. Pick one and stick with it for a week, then move on. And don’t beat yourself up. After a few months, you will start to see bigger changes that you never thought were possible. You will improve your energy, increase the quality of your sleep, enhance your mood, and just have more “spring” in your step. If you are on medication maybe you see them fall away.

I am always excited to chat with motivated people about next steps, if you want to chat about your health journey and if you are ready to start the path to feeling your best. You’ve got this!
